Unbusted Is Live!

Today, Unbusted is live on the App Store.

I kept asking myself whether an idea like this could exist: a way to help students practice focusing without taking away the phone that so often pulls their attention elsewhere. Now it's real, and students in the U.S. can try it.

That makes today exciting. It also makes it a good moment to explain what Unbusted is, and what it isn't.

The phone is part of the challenge

Phones bring a lot of useful things into a student's day. They also make it easy to move from a homework assignment to something else with a tap.

I know how easy it is to reach for a phone without much thought. My wife steps out of the room during a TV show, and I pause it to check mine. If I can get pulled in, it's worth asking what we're expecting of young people whose relationship with these devices is still taking shape.

I don't think every phone habit is a crisis. And I don't think a single app can solve a much larger attention challenge. But I do think it's worth asking whether the phone could play a different role during homework.

A coach, not a guard

A blocker app is like a prison guard. Unbusted is like a self-help coach.

That comparison isn't meant to dismiss blockers. A clear limit can be helpful. But Unbusted starts from a different idea: instead of removing the phone, repurpose it as a focus tool.

The student chooses a session length and starts working. During the session, the phone's camera checks only for the student's face. If the student moves out of view, Unbusted can offer a gentle reminder. If they leave the app, it can prompt them to return.

The hope is that seeing themselves at work, with a simple reminder when they drift, may help students notice where their attention has gone. That's a hypothesis we're exploring, not a benefit we've scientifically demonstrated. Unbusted can't tell whether a student understands an assignment or is doing the "right" work. It's a practice tool, not a measure of a child's character or ability.

Homework is the entry point. Reclaiming control over attention is the larger mission.

What's available today

Unbusted is available for iPhone in the U.S. You can Download Unbusted on the App Store.

The one-time in-app purchase is called Unbusted Lifetime Access.

Free for 7 days, then $39.99 once. No subscription.

That's the offer, stated plainly. There's no need to take my word for what the app can do. You can try a session and decide whether it fits your family.

A practice tool, not a surveillance system

Parents can enter a secure PIN on the student's phone to review a session log, including focus time, pauses, and reminders. The log stays on that phone; there's no separate parent dashboard.

The camera checks only for the student's face. Video isn't recorded, stored, or streamed to parents.

Those boundaries matter to me. Unbusted isn't there to watch a child or to make a judgment about them. It's meant to support a routine, while giving parents a way to review how a session went without hovering through every minute.

The phone hasn't changed. The hope is that a student's relationship with it can.

An invitation to begin

Today's launch is a beginning, not a conclusion. I want to keep learning from students and parents about what helps, what doesn't, and what a better relationship with attention might look like in everyday life.

If you try Unbusted, I'd be glad to hear what you think. Reply or leave a comment wherever you're reading, and subscribe on Substack if you'd like to follow along.

One focus session, one child, one step toward independence at a time.
